On Friday, 10 January 2025, Fickle, the third album by Tacet Tacet Tacet, the solo project of the Italian artist currently based in Utrecht (Netherlands), Francesco Zedde, will be released. Preceded in recent weeks by the singles Unfocus and Pertinence, it will be available in a deluxe handmade CD edition, standard and limited-edition cassette, as well as digitally, through a network of international labels: Attenuation Circuit (Germany), Bloody Sound (Italy), Gross Diskos (Greece), Light Item (Italy), and Slowth Records (Italy).
Fickle is an album that combines concrete sounds, ambient atmospheres, and experimentation, painting a varied and fascinating sonic landscape. The compositions arise from manipulating predominantly instrumental or naturally sourced sound material, including field recordings and samples. Through skilful processing, these elements transform abstraction and synthesis, where reversing, pitch shifting, granulation, and resampling are essential tools for balancing innovation with organic textures.
Francesco Zedde's travels to Iceland were crucial to the creation of Fickle, where he made several field recordings in nature and became acquainted with the stimulating local music scene.
The album's atmospheres evoke the spirit of artists like Ólafur Arnalds, Celer, Murcof, and Tim Hecker, with an approach that blends the playful lightness of Boards of Canada with the dark, enveloping intensity of Ben Frost. The use of glitch drum samples recalls early Múm productions, with echoes of Soley, Apparat, The Books, and Mogwai woven into the work's sonic fabric.
The album features significant collaborations: Jacopo Mittino, known as 52 Hearts Whale, co-composed the tracks Gamble, Dissimulation, Unfocus, and Recurrence, while Rea Dubach's ethereal voice, after undergoing radical treatment, appears on Recurrence, adding an unsettling touch to the piece.
TRACK-BY-TRACK | THE WORDS OF TACET TACET TACET
1 - Gamble | The album opens with an intense, processed drum solo that pulses with raw energy. It gradually becomes a more structured rhythm, adding a deep, heavy bass line that solidifies the soundscape. An engaging and tension-filled atmosphere sets the stage for the journey ahead.
2 - Dissimulation | A tense, ritualistic atmosphere immerses the listeners in unsettling harmonics and expansive virtual spaces. As the track progresses, an intricate and dissonant rhythm emerges, only to be abruptly interrupted, leaving a stark, uneasy silence that heightens the sense of unease.
3 - Pertinence | A dynamic combination of groove and glitch. Electronic beats drive the rhythm while processed guitar sounds weave a rich tapestry of melodic elements. This track effortlessly blends rhythmic complexity with experimental textures, maintaining a captivating flow.
4 - Unfocus | Opens Side B of the cassette with layers of intertwined tensions and crescendos. Glitchy electronic drums punctuate the soundscape, creating a fascinating interplay of rhythms and harmonies. The evolving dynamics of the track draw the listeners deeper into its immersive and chaotic atmosphere.
5 - Welter | Recorded in Iceland in 2019, this track blends the natural sounds of insects with the gentle chimes of bells and the warm tones of an old organ. The result is a soothing and light atmosphere that evokes a sense of serene tranquillity, transporting listeners to a peaceful space.
6 - Recurrence | Features two piano chords, obsessively repeated amidst glitches and digital artefacts. This minimalist and hypnotic approach creates a contemplative atmosphere, engaging listeners in a profound conclusion with its relentless and resonant repetition.
